Dengue to be made notifiable disease to prevent its spread

The district health department is planning to make dengue a notifiable disease and direct private doctors and hospitals to immediately notify health officials about patients with symptoms of dengue.
Only communicable diseases recorded at public hospitals are taken into account on a case-by-case basis. For dengue cases -- suspected, detected or treated -- at private hospitals, the numbers are alerted on a weekly or monthly basis.
Once implemented, doctors and hospitals will have to report every case of the mosquito-borne infection to the public health machinery so that prevention and containment measures can be initiated immediately to check its spread and prevent an outbreak situation.
Upon learning suspected or detected cases, health department officials can immediately carry out preventive measures such as fogging, adding gambusia fish to water bodies or eliminate stagnating water, officials said.
“As there is no specific drug and commercially available vaccine, prevention is the only strategy. Therefore, early reporting of dengue cases is necessary for implementing preventive measures, before it spreads further in an epidemic proportion. Hence, modules for implementing the direction are being chalked out,” a senior health official said.
It is learnt that the initiative has been given serious consideration following last year’s dengue cases figures when the city reported 401 cases, a three-year high.
Hence, this year, a larger emphasis has been given to dengue fever. The health authorities have undertaken various measures this season such as issuing directions to private hospitals for displaying dengue prices on their signboards and making it mandatory for private hospitals to not charge more than Rs 600 for dengue tests.
Web portal and helpline numbers for dengue
The district health department has also launched a web portal -www.humvsdengue.org on to help dengue patients find required blood group, map of all hospitals in the city and information about insurance schemes available for children suffering from dengue.
The health department has also launched a helpline number 0124-2222465 for dengue related complaints and an anti-fogging helpline number 1800-180-1817. People can report their complaints from 9 am to 5pm on all days.

Steps to curb outbreak of swine flu, malaria, dengue: Bawankule

Nagpur: The Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, concerned over the heavy toll the rain-related diseases take, has directed the District Administration to initiate all necessary measures for curbing the outbreak of swine flu, malaria, dengue and other infectious diseases in the city as well as rural areas. Viral fever and air-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and swine flu raise their ugly heads particularly during monsoon session. Many patients visit the civic hospitals for check-ups hence preventive as well as remedial measures should be in place to combat the diseases, Bawankule said.
The following preventive and remedial measures could be taken:
• Survey of fever-afflicted patients.
• Sending of blood samples of suspect patients to labs.
• Disposal of garbage and waste material at public places.
• Spraying of disinfectants at accumulated water breeding larvae of mosquitoes.
• Fogging in every village, limits of civic bodies at least twice a month.
• Intense awareness drive.
The District Administration has been advised to approach District Planning Committee in case they face shortage of funds in initiating such measures. A meeting was held and senior officers from the health department have been asked to submit a report about the programmes undertaken to curb the spread of diseases and the medical amenities provided by the civic hospitals.

Health officers find problems in controlling dengue

Health officers due to shortage of workers these days find problems in controlling dengue in city and the same situation is in other districts. It is the reason why dengue larva teams were not increased from 25 that are continued for the last two or more months. Due to shortage of malaria workers, now the Health Department has decided to take services of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) to control dengue in city, might be the same will be happened in other districts. There are about 80,000 ASHAs doing different type of works in rural areas and urban areas too. However, for urban areas there are Urban Social Health Activists (USHAs) but they are few.

According to information, district health authorities have decided to impart training to the district’s 80 ASHAs about dengue, malaria and other seasonal diseases. There might be three to five days training to ASHAs might be next week.
However, the dengue suspected and positive patients are found but not more so the health officers are not so serious about it. They will be asked to go door to door to know about the fever and see the dengue larvae, create awareness among the public how to be protected from the dengue and malaria. They will usually go to the slum areas of the city from where more cases of dengue were found. No dengue larvae survey in all parts of the district this time, the teams are sent to only those areas from where the dengue positive patients are found or complaints are from VIPs in their areas.
Senior medical specialist said once the dengue larvae started breeding in water deposited at inside and outside houses, it will be difficult to control dengue fever, so there is need to control it in advance. Kolar area where there were more dengue patients in last two years and the senior officers were forced to come on road to create awareness among the public besides monitoring the dengue larvae survey. When contacted Dr Veena Sinha, Chief Medical and Health Officer, said dengue larvae survey teams will be hiked soon. At present there are 25 teams. Besides, 80 ASHAs will soon be imparted training how to survey.
