29 suspected cases of dengue in city this month

Aurangabad: Expressing concerns over the growing cases of vector borne diseases in the city, mayor Trimbak Tupe on Tuesday directed the municipal administration to deploy additional staff members and expedite the preventive drives.

Even though municipal authorities claim to have completed fogging, spraying and abate treatment in all the high risk localities, the city has report significant number of dengue positive and suspect cases in the current month. Cases of diarrhoea have also gone up in the month after monsoon showers changed the climatic conditions here.

In a weekly meeting held to assess preventive drives, Dr Archana Rane, in-charge of the said, "29 cases of dengue suspects, 7 dengue positive and 34 cases of the diarrhoea were reported in the city in July. No death has been reported due to dengue so far in the city."

Rane further said, "The civic body is conducting aggressive drives to control vector borne diseases. We have already completed fogging, abate treatment and spraying in all the high risk localities while similar drives are going on in other parts. More than 10,500 houses were covered under the drive in seven days wherein our paramedical staff emptied about 16,000 water containers that could have increased mosquitoes," she said.

"The civic body carries out the drives across the city between 5.30 am and 1.30 pm on week days. Apart from this, we have also assigned the responsibility of fogging, abate treatment and spraying to 106 staff members who are supervising the drive in 115 wards. Efforts are being made to dedicate one person for each municipal ward which would further expedite the system," she said.

The civic body had recently identified 165 localities that are prone to diseases and placed them in high risk category.

Ayub Jagirdar, opposition leader in Aurangabad Municipal Corporation alleged the authorities of not implementing the drives in many parts of old city. "It is a densely populated area which also lack proper drainage facilities. Large number of patients of the dengue and diarrhoea are being reported from the area only because the drive were not carried out, he said.
