Central team allays fears, says dengue on decline

KEONJHAR: EVEN as the number of dengue cases in the State touched 1,355 and 77 new cases were reported, the six-member Central team which visited the epicentre of dengue, Barbil, on Sunday said the cases are on the decline and people should not panic.
The team, led by Joint Director of Vector-borne Diseases Dr Gagan Singh Sonal is in Keonjhar to assist in prevention of the vector-borne disease which has spread to other districts and claimed one life in Ganjam.
There is no rise in the incidence of dengue in Barbil, he said, adding that since the awareness level in the community on dengue has gone up, more people are coming to the hospital for check-up giving an impression that the cases are rising. Dr Sonal interacted with the locals and government officials after reaching Barbil Municipal area on Sunday afternoon.
Talking to mediapersons, he said due to lack of cleanliness and awareness on dengue, the disease spreads fast in the locality but is under control now. He also held discussions with the district administration regarding steps taken to check dengue.
Local civic authority should take steps and undertake a cleanliness drive, Dr Sonal said.
Meanwhile, the total number of dengue positive cases in Keonjhar district has gone up to 858 out of 2,561 patients examined for the disease, said Dr SS Bal, Additional District Medical Officer, who is camping at Barbil.
