Dengue awareness drive in schools on the cards

KARACHI: Sindh Prevention and Control Programme for Dengue, Programme Manager, Dr Masood Ahmed Solangi, on Saturday said that dengue awareness drive will be launched in schools across the metropolis from August.
Dr Solangi said that management of the programme had decided to launch a comprehensive dengue awareness campaign in educational institutions across the city to avert any epidemic like situation in peak season.
He said dengue awareness drive would be conducted in primary to secondary level schools of the city like previous year. About 50,000 dengue awareness pamphlets would be distributed among school going children during this drive, he added.
He said Sindh Health Department had also planned to distribute 50,000 dengue fever awareness pamphlets across the province through district health officers in order to generate awareness in general public and also to avert any epidemic situation.
He appealed to the civic authorities to launch fumigation drive against dengue in all districts of Karachi. He said nurseries, graveyards, lakes, ponds, swimming pools, tyre shops, water pumping stations, hydrants, construction cities, and waste dumping areas are the main sources of dengue spread; therefore, authorities concerned must ensure cleanliness of major drains and other water sites in Karachi to avoid spread of dengue mosquitoes.
He requested the civic authorities to adopt necessary preventive measures by mobilising the health inspectors and immediately eliminate the water pockets that can lead to spread of dengue. The fumigation and larvicidal activity should be carried out in city on urgent basis.
Dr Solangi informed that a total of 802 dengue fever cases had been reported in Sindh province since January 1 this year, out of which 741 were detected from Karachi, while one death was also reported from Nawabshah so far.
He said dengue fever symptoms include headache, skin rash that looked like measles, pain in muscles and joints, and pain in eyes. He said dengue fever cases are also being reported in other cities of the province but the number of cases is high in Karachi.
He urged citizens to keep their food items and water properly covered at home and workplace. Dr Solangi said stagnant water must not be allowed to accumulate in any part of the city and citizens should adopt preventative measures at their homes in this regard, especially after monsoon rains.
