Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has submitted a Cabinet paper in connection with recruiting a team of 15,000 personnel for training to inspect homes and other premises without prior notice for possible dengue mosquito breeding sites, Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala said.
Dr. Mahipala said the 1,500 strong team will be deployed countrywide to detect all possible dengue mosquito breeding sites in private, public and state premises.
The team will carryout inspections without prior notice. The public are requested to clean their premises before the arrival of inspection teams. Meanwhile, Epidemiology Unit sources said nearly 25,000 dengue patients and over 40 deaths had been reported from all parts of the country during the past six and half months. Over 50 percent of dengue patients had been reported from the Western Province and from the Colombo district. Construction sites are the most common locations that harbour dengue mosquito breeding sites. The entomologists had found Dengue mosquito larvae from many school premises. The dengue control programme is implemented three days a week amidst the increasing number of dengue patients in 60 high risk MOH areas in 11 districts, the sources added.
